Chocolate-Colored Lenses
6 Nov 2009 | 6:45 pmTerrific post written by our friend Katie over at Rock the Red.net. Check it out here, and read on for an excerpt where she defines the “Hershey Mentality,” which is particularly relevant tonight as Tyler Sloan scored the first goal down in Florida: That “Never Give Up” attitude is what Caps’ prospects are learning. That’s why Tyler Sloan had a goal Wednesday night. That’s why Mathieu Perreault had two assists in his NHL debut. That’s why Fleishmann has 4 points in 4 games. That’s why Quintin Laing has no sense of self-preservation. That’s why Keith Aucoin forgets… -
Farewell to a Fan Among Fans
5 Nov 2009 | 6:25 pmThomas L. Jenkins Today The Washington Post published an obituary for Washington, D.C., resident Thomas L. Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins, as seen in this photo from my season ticket-holder booklet, was featured in the 2009-2010 Washington Capitals ticket book, and was clearly a dedicated fan. This excerpt from Mr. Jenkins’ obituary was particularly illustrative of his devotion to the sport we all love: “He had a boisterous personality,” said his son, Neil Jenkins, 19, a student at Montgomery College in Rockville. “He wasn’t afraid to cheer loudly. He made friends with… -
Maine Objective: Pursuing Pucks and Mighty Fine Microbrews
5 Nov 2009 | 3:21 am(Portland, Maine) — Embarked I am on roadtrip no. 1 of the new hockey season, catching up with my friends Mike and Marleen, who are newly relocated here from D.C. and adjusting to life without live Caps’ hockey. Like so many others, they are Versus-less at home this fall, and for the Caps’ first few appearances on that network this season they took to lodging themselves at a Portland Vietnamese restaurant bar that has the TV feed. Mike and Marleen are most enthusiastic puckheads, and they’ve told me that they firmly believe they’re converting the Vietnamese… -

6 Nov 2009 | 11:38 amRuss Cohen reports from the other side of the Atlantic. He's been to the chocolate town, and has seen the future of Milk Duds. And so much more. Including Reijo Ruotsalainen. I’ve been tracking some youngsters and here are my thoughts on them. Jason Demers – San Jose Sharks – defenseman – He wears #60 for the team and usually those players don’t hang around for long but the 21-year-old rookie is getting top power play time and so far this season he has 10 assists in his first 17 NHL games. He’s 6-0, 198 pounds and plays tough. Not bad for a 7th rounder! I traveled to “Chocolate… -

30 Oct 2009 | 3:06 amSTOCKHOLM – We all love winners, and many books have been written about what exactly makes a winner, without a definite answer. They come in all shapes and sizes, and they come from the east and the west. They’re nice guys and they’re tough guys, and they’re forwards, defencemen and goalies. Looking at a young player, it can be difficult to predict, or tell, who the true winners will be. They’re competitors, sure, but a lot of people compete without winning. There’s something special about the players who always seem to be able to win. Naturally, they’re easy to spot after the… -

The best NHL player who won't win the Stanley Cup
6 Nov 2009 | 2:33 pmAfter Alex Rodriguez helped some team in some sport Leahy cares about win a world title, A-Rod evidently stopped being "the best player in all of American sports who will never win a championship." At least in the eyes of Dan Levy of The Sporting Blog. Levy, a lapsed puckhead from The Great Lockout Purge of 2005, called us today to ask if there were any players in the NHL that would fit that description: A star player who will "will end his career with utter disappointment" by not hoisting the Stanley Cup. We tried to talk him out of this first one. It didn't work:For… -

Coming Soon To the NHL Network: More Radio on TV
6 Nov 2009 | 1:00 pmWe love NHL Live, it’s usually dependent on the host of the day, but the show ultimately entertains us most afternoons when we see it. The Goalie Mask: Saving Grace or Losing Face
6 Nov 2009 | 5:57 am"Johnny Bower you're my hero!" (photo by Dick Shadd, Tampa Bay Times) The flurry of comments and video highlights of Ondrej Pavelec’s “maskless” save vs. the Senators on Halloween night (and on the 50th anniversary of Jacques Plante’s first donning the mask no less!) caused me to reflect on the whole notion of how or why a goalie loses his or her mask in the first place. Aaron Musick: Avs win a shootout vs. Chicago

Shark Notes - November 5th
5 Nov 2009 | 7:47 am- The Sharks earned their 6th straight win, 4th straight on the road, with a tight checking 3-2 shootout win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night. Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley (PP) scored in regulation, and Dan Boyle scored the lone OT shootout goal to pad the Sharks lead for first place in the Pacific Division. San Jose trails Colorado by 1 point for the best record in the Western Conference. There was a fascinating bout of pregame coachmanship from Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Ken Hitchcock and San Jose Sharks head coach Todd McLellan. Last season Hitchcock offered a… -

Darryl Hunt: Jones, WorSharks Win 4-1 Over Springfield In Fight Filled Contest
1 Nov 2009 | 5:22 pmThe Worcester Sharks used three special teams goals to defeat the Springfield Falcons 4-1 Sunday afternoon in a fight filled contest at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts in front of 2,356 fans. The WorSharks’ special teams were put to the task early when Michael Wilson was called for a high sticking double minor, and Worcester rose to the occasion by grabbing a shorthanded goal just 13 seconds into the penalty. Ovechkin Won’t Dress for Weekend Games
6 Nov 2009 | 8:54 pmAlexander Ovechkin will be sitting out of the Washington Capitals lineup for the weekend as he recuperates from an upper body injury which he suffered during the overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets last Sunday. image: TSN He still leads the league with 14 goals in 14 games and also has nine assists. I’m sure the Caps, and their fans, are trying not to panic too much but they lost to the New Jersey Devils this past weekend and are now 1-4-0 without Ovie (since the 2005-2006 season). It was bound to happen, though. Almost every player has suffered some sort of injury in their career… -
O’Brien Suspended For Hitting Avery
5 Nov 2009 | 3:26 pmShane O’Brien strikes again. He’s hot-tempered and I think he gets into more penalty trouble than he should and this is no exception. The NHL has suspended the Vancouver Canucks defenceman after his stick made contact with New York Rangers player, Sean Avery, while they were both seated on the bench. image: TSN A melee had broken out between the teams and it was just one of many scrums that happened as a result but you, obviously, cannot hit someone while you’re on the bench. O’Brien will miss Thursday’s game at Minnesota but will be eligible to return on… -
Huselius on Injured Reserve List
5 Nov 2009 | 2:27 pmThe Columbus Blue Jackets will be without forward, Kristian Huselius, for at least a week after he got injured during practice. He’s been placed on the injured reserve list retroactively as of November 3, 2009. image: TSN While his game has not quite been on fire, he is off to a fairly decent start having scored five goals and posting four assists in the 13 games he’s played. Last year, he notched up 56 points. I think that Huselius is a really great player so I’m sure they will miss him. While he was on the Calgary Flames roster, he did well at first but then he… -
Did Calgary Flames Get H1N1 Shot Priority?
4 Nov 2009 | 8:33 amI live in Calgary and, like many places in the world, the locals are scrambling to get vaccinated against the H1N1 virus (a.k.a. swine flu). The Canadian government isn’t charging residents for the shot but each province has to manage how they get rolled out. image: TSN Unfortunately, things have been chaotic and disorganized so some people have had to wait as much as 7 hours while others have even been turned away. Needless to say, Alberta has some pretty frustrated residents and some have freaked out over reports that the Calgary Flames and their families were vaccinated against… -
Wisniewski Handed Two-Game Suspension
3 Nov 2009 | 8:36 amAfter Anaheim Ducks defenceman James Wisniewski took a forearm to the head of forward Shane Doan over the weekend, the NHL has decided that the action warrants a two-game suspension. image: TSN The hit took place during the first period after the Coyotes were left shorthanded for having too many men on the ice. Wisniewski crossed the Ducks blueline and delivered a hard blow to Doan’s head. There wasn’t a penalty assessed at the time for the hit but as soon as play stopped, Coyotes d-man, Keith Yandle, decided to send Wisniewski a message. As a result, he was given a 10-minute game…

On the Shelf, Part IX: Living the Hockey Dream
31 Oct 2009 | 8:56 am(Continued from Part VIII)I haven’t retired (as one faithful reader has suggested), but this unyielding injury has kept me off the ice and on the shelf. So here’s another review of a hockey book (one of about five dozen on my bookshelf.)The beguiling beauty in Brian Kennedy’s Living the Hockey Dream is the diversity of stories. Amidst the unique insights into the Gretzkys and Granatos and Hulls and Howes, Kennedy presents profiles of unheralded hockey people such as an animated arbiter, meandering minor leaguers, and a hoarder of hockey sweaters. Whether his subjects are male or female,… -

In off the ledge Please
4 Nov 2009 | 4:46 pmIn off the ledge Bruins fans. In off the ledge. It is way too early to panic. The Bruins will make the playoffs with their current configuration. They play in a fairly week division and can get it done. Look at how they have played over the last three games, and it’s easy to see a club that is working hard, but has a bit of a goal scoring problem. Having said that, here are three things the Bruins need to do to win their division and possible make a run at Lord Stanley. 1. Get an immediate return for Phil Kessel. The Boston Front Office did a very nice job jettisoning a malcontent that… -

5 Oct 2009 | 5:07 pmIf I may borrow a bit of old Charlie Dickens, this weekend was like the beginning of “A tale of Two Cities”, “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.” I don’t want to get overly dramatic here, but it really was the best and worst of the Boston Bruins on opening weekend. I will start at the worst of times. On Thursday the Bruins opened against The Washington Capitals. I had friends up from DC for the tilt, and to say they were excited is a gross understatement. You know my Math book? Picture that times ten. So, Ginger, Cindy and I met in Boston around 2 O’clock and… -
Wake up Fans
1 Oct 2009 | 5:04 amIn about 11 hours, the hibernation ends. That’s right; the beloved Boston Bruins are skating back onto the ice tonight at 7 PM against the dreaded Washington Capitals. Boston and Washington will both come into tonight’s opener with the weight of huge expectations on their shoulders after both lost out in the second round of the playoffs last season. That is the past; I am in need of the old math book right now, as it’s finally here! Hockey season is FINALLY here! Tonight should be a dandy. Ginger and Cindy are winging their way in from Washington right now, and I will be meeting them at…

Forsberg to the KHL? Not Likely. Update, Habs Claim Jay Leach
6 Nov 2009 | 7:52 amNew Feature below... If you aren't on twitter, you can keep up with my latest tweets between blogs where I will give hints as to what I am working on, interesting links, and more. Reports were rampant yesterday that Forsberg had committed to play in the KHL for the Ak Bars Zazan. Peter has denied this and clearly stated that he will not commit to anyone until after th -
"Foppa is Healthy." Kostitsyns for Whitney, O'Brien Suspended, Sabres
5 Nov 2009 | 9:36 amGoalie Stefan Liv of Team Sweden who is practicing with Forsberg in preparation for the coming Tournament had the following quote today: "I managed to stop a few. He rang the first shot off of my mask. It is clear that he is healthy and will play in the NHL again. I think he believes this as well." The Rangers, Flyers, Montreal, Washington, Colorado, Chicago and Dallas are all very intere -
Revenge is a Dish Best Served on Ice...The Top Ten Players Who Know.
4 Nov 2009 | 9:57 amThis season has been a remarkable story for players that have had aspersions cast onto them recently and yet have thrived like no one's business....Here are my top ten guys who have really gotten their "Come-Uppance." #10 Dany Heatley Twelth in scoring with 17 points in 15 games. It pains me to put Heatley on this list, because I was so opposed to the way that he handled this whole situation -
Quick Hit Rumor Update..Frolov, Whitney, Price, the Kostitsyns, Savard to..
3 Nov 2009 | 5:18 pmWe are aware the site is having sporadic issues in certain regions today and into this evening. This should be resolved shortly. Thanks and apologies for any inconvenience. Ek Quick Hit. Met with a source who was in town for a few hours today and was given a ton to follow up on. As is usual in these situations, some of that which I am told can be shared, while the sourc -
Team USA to be Announced at the Winter Classic. Forsberg and KHL....
3 Nov 2009 | 10:53 amMeeting with a primary source in just over an over at 3pm ET, so I will have my rumor update then... In the meantime, USA Hockey has announced that it will unveil its 23 man roster at the Winter Classic in a special ceremony. BRILLIANT idea. Just perfect. The Winter Classic hits such a broad scope of people in America and has quickly become the one true American hockey event of the year.

Thin Air: November 5th, Late Edition
5 Nov 2009 | 11:36 pmOh yes, another night of hockey highlights. I have the Ducks – Predators game on the DVR, but I can’t get motivated to watch. I mean, the point was to see what the problem with the Predators is, but I can’t do it. Not tonight. - T-Squared? OK, Kevin Weekes. You can call Tim Thomas whatever you like. Still, Weekes is a solid commentator on NHL On the Fly. He doesn’t do stunned-by-the-moves all that well, but then again, he speaks with authority when he has to, and like a fan when I want him to. Good job, Kevin. - I will be losing the NHL Network next week. I can’t… -
Daytime Hockey Thoughts – November 5th, 2009
5 Nov 2009 | 12:45 pmJust some thoughts: - You know what? Your incomplete theory on why attendance is low putting the blame squarely at the fans holds no interest for me. Fleshing out real reasons with actual ideas and research does interest me. Start a flame war on your own time. I don’t care. - I know people think Tom is insane in the latest episode of The Rink. I don’t completely disagree. But it’s certainly entertaining. - Peter Budaj won a hockey game last night, which should put a cold chill down the thousands of Avs fans thinking he was the second coming of Typhoid Mary. - I really need… -
Thin Air: Hockey Thoughts on a November Evening
3 Nov 2009 | 11:39 pmHaven’t done one if these in a long while. Here we… go: - Phil Kessel took 10 shots on goal in a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay, and managed to be minus one. Congrats to the Toronto media, who will ignore everything in the name of overzealous reporting. Go team! - The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Ducks, with Sidney Crosby stacked the pads, taking two points from the West. Which is all I ask of them. But couldn’t they have taken two from the Wild as well? What was so hard about that? - How do you lose nine games in a row in this league? How do you only win one game in 13? Insane. -… -
Can I Get an Amen?

Ducks vs.Leafs: At Study in WTF
26 Oct 2009 | 11:46 pmI was prepared to do an entire write up of tonight’s Leafs – Ducks game. Instead, I was as inspired to recap the game as the Ducks were to play hockey tonight. This game was one of the worst games I have ever seen live. I have been to many hockey games over the past several years, seen many levels of hockey, from juniors to the NHL, from international competitions to the low minors, and I can easily say that tonight’s tilt was the most pathetic display of hockey I have ever witnessed. In fact, there is no reason to do a descriptive write up, or any sort of analysis. The best…

No Way To Treat A Star
7 Nov 2009 | 12:14 amfrom Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette, Lafleur and Roy were the last two of what could be called the iconic players of the most legendary franchise in the game. While the Canadiens have had whole buckets full of stars and Hall of Famers, there have been no more than five towering figures who made the team what it is today. Howie Morenz. Rocket Richard. Jean Béliveau. Guy Lafleur. Patrick Roy. They were the players who in their day electrified an entire province and reached such status that it was possible, with a straight face, to call the Forum St. Patrick’s Cathedral. If hockey… -
Being Cautious With Hedman
6 Nov 2009 | 7:15 pmfrom Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes, Tampa Bay Lightning rookie defenseman Victor Hedman will not play in Saturday’s game with the Canadiens because of a concussion sustained in Thursday’s game with the Senators on a brutal hit by Ottawa’s Chris Neil. Hedman’s next chance to play will be Thursday at home against the Wild, but coach Rick Tocchet said he could not say for sure if Hedman will be ready, and that the team will be very cautious. “Back in the day you’d throw water on your back and go out,” Tocchet said. “But now, with those… -
Would A Minor League Team Do Better In Phoenix?
6 Nov 2009 | 7:08 pmfrom Mark Sunnucks of Phoenix Business Journal, Some sports business experts and Coyotes fans believe Phoenix is less of an NHL market and more of a minor-league hockey market in terms of fans’ demand for tickets and interest in the sport. The American Hockey League is hockey’s equivalent to AAA baseball. AHL teams serves as feeders to NHL parents. The league has teams in some larger cities such as Houston, Toronto and Milwaukee, and in some smaller markets including Syracuse, N.Y., Hershey, Pa., and Austin. AHL ticket prices are lower than the NHL’s. Coyotes tickets run… -
They Just Keep Hanging Around
6 Nov 2009 | 4:46 pmfrom Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, So when top center Jason Arnott misses six games or agitator Jordan Tootoo misses the opening month of the season, yeah, the Preds feel that. But they survived the opening month of the season, winning their last three games in October to get back to the .500 mark. Somehow, the scrappy Preds are hanging in there. “We’re actually hanging in there quite well,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz told ESPN.com this week. “We’ve learned to be really resilient. You can get it done, but it’s got to be a group effort.” Having one of the… -
One Team Rolling, One Team Needs A Win
6 Nov 2009 | 4:32 pmfrom Jim Hughson of CBC, After last Saturday’s 3-1 win in Calgary, Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said, “For the first time all year we were a five-man unit, we made some nice plays. It was impressive. We looked like a hockey team.” That served as an ominous warning to the league that, despite a slow start, reports of the Wings demise are rather premature. The Wings returned home and dispatched the Bruins 2-0 then beat San Jose 2-1 in a game they deserved to win before the shootout. They’ve won three in a row and four of five. So what’s got the winged wheel rolling…

Game 16: Habs/Bruins
5 Nov 2009 | 9:53 amUntil the NHL returns the Nordiques to Quebec City there are 2 teams in the league that when facing the Canadiens, have the potential to turn a game into an insant classic. Habs/Leafs games carry a huge significance to any soul who has grown up waiting patiently every week of the season for those legendary tilts on Hockey Night in Canada, but there is one team in the league that carries a special kind of hate within our hearts. While the matches between the Canadiens and Leafs play to nationalistsic and cultural narratives, to the true fan of the Canadiens and the game of hockey, the… -
Game 15: Habs/Thrashers
1 Nov 2009 | 12:37 pmAfter a terrifying meltdown in the late stages of the Halloween match against the Maple Leafs, the Habs will be happy to get away from the barber-pole costumes that always seem to create paranormal activity, and take on the Atlanta Thrashers. I apologise for not getting a game blog up for the Laffs game. I had a Halloween event that went far longer than I had expcted. Can the good guys take another two pointsTuesday night? -
Game 13: Habs/Hawks
30 Oct 2009 | 8:22 amOur Habbies are in Chicago tonight to face the Blackhawks who roll into tonight’s action with a 7-4-1 which is good enough for 3rd place in their Western Conference. The Hawks have been on everyone’s radar since their playoff run last season and the off-ice shananigans of Pat Kane in the summer. If there is one franchise in the league who’s fans can understand that scenario – it is us. Espially now since we are enduring our own shananigans with Kane’s former junior linemate Sergei K. I don’t know what it is about the Hawks – they’ve always been… -
Game 12: Habs/Pens
28 Oct 2009 | 9:32 amThis is one of those can’t miss games. Anytime the defending champs are on your schedule you circle it in thick red. Montreal is shooting for their fifth straight – but there aren’t many of us who believe the hype yet. Beating the Isles twice, the Thrashers and the Rangers isn’t exactly bragging territory. Still, a good result tonight will go a long way to showing what this team is made of. The Pens are 9-2, and are really playing some good hockey in this young season. Malkin has 13 points and Crosby has 11. They will also be very fresh and motivated as they last… -
Game 11: Habs/Isles
26 Oct 2009 | 9:55 amTonight is version 2.0. Expect the Islanders to bring it considering the sHalaking they took last time around. AK46 has been demoted to the fourth line. I’m not sure I like it. Not that I care about sending a message to a player – Frolov clearly got the message in LA. But I am a huge fan of coaches who can send a message while setting the player up in a good position to be successful. Andrei Kostistyn will NOT be successful on the 4th line. Simply put, he has never played ahockey game in his life where he could be confused as a 4th liner. Hopefully he can use this game to fire…

Happy?
1 Nov 2009 | 10:31 amI read today that Toskala is “happy” with his performance and said it was his best start of the year. That is saying a lot about how far Vesa has come since platooning with Raycroft two seasons ago. Raycroft and Toskala were easily the two most deluded goaltenders in the league when they played together. It was never a reflection on them when they lost and they always felt “great” about their performance. If I had that first goal scored against me in NHL 10, I would be emailing EA and saying there was a glitch in the game and could they please fix it. No NHL caliber… -
How Quickly They Forget
31 Oct 2009 | 1:02 pmJust one short week ago the Maple Leafs were winless and at the bottom of the league. Well, they are still at the bottom of the league, but have put together three solid games, one win and two OT losses. I’m not sure what part of that modest success would make Niklas Hagman think that he needs to do a pass across the middle of the ice from a prime shooting position with bodies going to the net. There are WAY too many drop passes for a team with maybe 3 players that could be classified as “skill players”. Seriously, let’s keep it simple stupids. Hit the net… -
No Gaborik, but Wild use strong 2nd period to earn 3-2 home victory over the NY Rangers
30 Oct 2009 | 8:04 pmLast season, it was supposed to be the big payoff season for Marian Gaborik as he attempted to raise his value for what was likely going to be the most lucrative contract of his NHL career. We were told that Gaborik took the time to prepare himself properly to have a strong and healthy season. Yet before the season started, then Wild General Manager Doug Risebrough tendered one last big money offer for Gaborik. Gaborik and his agent decided to pass and at that point many wondered if it would be prudent to deal the sniper just in case he might get hurt. As Wild fans know all too well,… -
From Out Of Nowhere
30 Oct 2009 | 11:41 amOne of the reasons it’s sometimes hard to be a Leafs fans is the level of expectation that comes with an over-saturation of information. Being a sports fan in general is all about the unexpected things that can happen within an environment bound by strict rules. One thing Leafs fans don’t really get to see is something happen that wasn’t already thought about, predicted, reviewed, panned or just plain-old bitched about. Other NHL teams have had small surprises, like the Oilers’ Sam Gagner on 2007/08. Or huge surprises, like Steve Mason winning the Calder trophy with… -

Avs Winning Games and Losing Fans
6 Nov 2009 | 3:39 amWednesday night’s Avs-Coyotes game was a Colorado record for low attendance. Adrian Dater asked fans what happened and he got back some very interesting responses. According to Dater, a lot of fans reported ticket prices weren’t the only factor keeping them away from the Pepsi Center. Some fans reported problems with the Avs ticket office — strange ticketing policies and newer season ticket purchasers getting treated better than older ones. Apparently the music played in the Pepsi Center is pretty bad, too, and geared more toward teens than the older fans who probably make… -
Caps Miss Ovechkin
5 Nov 2009 | 2:57 amThe Devils seem to agree with the conventional wisdom that the Caps aren’t the same team without Alex Ovechkin. New Jersey beat the Capitals 3-2 at home, where the Devils have been pretty awful. The Devils had a lot of comments relating to how the Capitals seem bummed about playing without their star. About the only downside to Ovechkin’s durability (he missed just four games in the previous four seasons) is that the team never had to learn to play without him. The crazy thing is, even though he’s week-to-week, he apparently was still in the mix to play last night. So… -
Some NHL GMs Already Prepared to Surrender
4 Nov 2009 | 2:59 amWhat a crazy season. Jeff Gordon says he’s already hearing trade chatter from certain NHL GMs, with many already thinking about giving up their season and trying to dump salary. What separates NHL GMs from most other sports, is that NHL GMs only seem to think about salary implications after a contract is signed. Vinny Lecavalier, under attack in Tampa, has to be one of those names being whispered about (despite a strong game last night and despite a no-trade clause). People are surprised by Lecavalier’s struggle; I was surprised by his success. Carolina will also probably be a… -
Columbus Discovers Long Hair and Logan’s Run
3 Nov 2009 | 2:49 amJake Voracek of the Columbus Blue Jackets seems like an awesome guy. He’s got long 70s hair and a love of 80s music. Coach Ken Hitchcock says Voracek is on the verge of becoming an elite player, although when Hitchcock says that, I kind of wonder if he means Voracek is some kind of amazing back-checker. The Blue Jackets held-on to beat the Caps in overtime last night. It was a crazy game that even featured a goalie switch designed to give Columbus players a little bit of a rest. Finally, speaking of Columbus, former Blue Jacket and Ohio native Dan Fritsche is one of the many veteran… -
Stamkos Busts the Bust Myth
30 Oct 2009 | 2:54 amAre we too impatient with first-round draft picks? Maybe. Even though he finished last season relatively strong, Steve Stamkos was written off as a bust, or at least as someone with the potential to be a huge bust. Now, 10 games into Tampa’s season, Stamkos has nine goals and five assists and looks like a real NHL presence. In fact, Stamkos leads Tampa in goals so far this season. Vinny Lecavalier says the Lightning are average now, but are close to becoming much better. There are certainly a lot of nice pieces to work with. It makes you wonder just how much damage Barry Melrose did in…

This Week in D-I: November 6, 2009
6 Nov 2009 | 10:00 pmUsed to play “I spy with my wandering eye” with my kids, when both they (all six of them) and I were a lot younger. Found myself doing so again this week as I perused the D-I landscape. What Caught my Eye: WCHA Da Badgers. This Week in Hockey East: Nov. 5, 2009
4 Nov 2009 | 10:00 pmMore Tightly Packed Than Ever? Hockey East has gotten off to a sluggish (at best) start against the other conferences. A 16-14-1 record doesn't appear all that bad at first glance, but once you get past the 5-0 record against upstart Atlantic Hockey, the results are decidedly underwhelming: 3-3 against the ECACHL, 6-5-1 versus the CCHA and an ugly 2-6 against the WCHA. Admittedly, only two teams ...

Changing Course
4 Nov 2009 | 10:00 pm[[Northern Michigan]] goaltender Brian Stewart is the returning two-year starter with pre-season accolades. But six games into the season, sophomore Reid Ellingson has played nearly as many minutes with better stats. Gophers' Barriball Appears Lost for Season
4 Nov 2009 | 10:00 pmFor the second time this week, Minnesota has lost another key component, this time, perhaps for the whole season. How the slash of a skate severed a nose, altered a life
1 Nov 2009 | 12:47 pmOn Feb. 9, 2008, veteran NHL linesman Pat Dapuzzo suffered career-ending and life-altering injuries when he was accidentally struck in the face by the skate blade of Flyers forward Steve Downie during a game in Philadelphia against the New York Rangers. The damage to Dapuzzo’s face and head was far more serious than simply cosmetic. In his own words, as told to writer Christopher Botta of FanHouse.com, the 50-year-old Dapuzzo recounts his memories of the incident, the countless surgeries, the deep depression, the support of the NHL community and his determination to live a normal life… -

50th Anniversary of the Goalie Mask: A Celebration of Goalie Artwork
1 Nov 2009 | 9:32 pmNovember 1st marks the 50th anniversary of the first time a goalie, Jacques Plante, wore a mask in an NHL game. Not quite the same as Willie O’Ree breaking the NHL’s color barrier, or even the addition of the forward pass – a rule cursed by goalies ever since – but a landmark event in [...] -

Only 80 Games Remaining; It’s Time to Panic
6 Oct 2009 | 10:28 amThe sky is falling in Toronto and Vancouver, and things are not much better in the rest of Canada for that matter. The fans in Toronto are clamouring for coach Ron Wilson to make Swedish rookie Jonas Gustavsson the starter after two lackluster performances by Vesa Toskala. In Vancouver the Stanley Cup parade plans have [...] -
Top Ten Goalie Questions for 2009-10 Season
1 Oct 2009 | 11:24 pm10. Is Craig Anderson ready for prime time? He showed he could be the go-to guy when Tomas Vokun was hurt last year in Florida and now he gets the chance to prove it in Colorado. But Peter Budaj is ready to show he can still be the guy if Anderson falters. 9. Who’s the real [...] -

Record Setting Attendance
5 Nov 2009 | 10:22 amHow bout them Avs? They set yet another record for attendance last night against the Coyotes. Their 11012 butts in the seats is the worst showing ever for the team. Many of you may wonder how this could happen with the Avs being the best team in the Western Conference. Yes, the economy can be [...] -

What Rivalry? This Rivalry – Notes From Saturday
25 Oct 2009 | 6:13 pmI was at Pepsi Center on Saturday to witness the Colorado Avalanche take on the Detroit Red Wings for the second time this season. No More Malkin...For 2-3 Weeks
29 Oct 2009 | 12:35 pmYou have to take the good with the bad sometimes and in the case of last nights 6-1 win over the Habs, Crosby's hat trick comes with a heavy price, Malkin is out for 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury. Heinous Hartnell
9 Oct 2009 | 8:28 amLast night the Pens met the Flyers for the first of many great hockey games to come. It's too bad Philly plays like dirtballs when they are losing because the game was high scoring and action packed for three full periods. The Pens looked great right from the first puck drop. Crosby won 88% of face offs, they were connecting passes on every line, and Fedotenko put the pressure on in front of the Flyers net that led to them scoring on their own goal. The only problem the Pens had throughout the evening, again, was penalties. The real story happened with a second left in the third period when… -
Pens HD Radio: So Far So Good
7 Oct 2009 | 8:11 amSince launching 10/1, 105.9 HD2 has been live and streaming Pens content all day everyday. So far the station is greatly surpassing my expectations.Prior to going up, one could have easily imagined that this was just going to be an advertising centric channel with useless information to lure listeners in. As an avid listener of sports talk radio, I have to admit that I didn't think it would be all that great. To my surprise, the content is pretty good. As a fan, you are always eager to listen and learn news, stories, information and insight into your team. I should have known the Pens…

Chemistry Builds a Winner
5 Nov 2009 | 3:57 amIt took the Yankees 9 years to win another Championship. It took a change in the line-up and a new stadium. But most importantly, it took chemistry. You can't discount what that ingredient can do in a winning recipe. Certainly Jeter has spent the last 17 years of his life with some of the same team mates. But it wasn't until the addition of key elements to turn the Yankees into the World Champs for the 27th time.My point? Winning teams take time and patience. No one gave up on the Yankees when they didn't even make the post season. They just needed the right ingredients. They got them this… -
Sabres Even the Score
4 Nov 2009 | 6:50 pmSo, supposedly IceGirl photos make people feel better? Does it? Okay, We knew it wouldn't last forever. Nothing does. So what if the Buffalo Sabres got a little help from those guys in stripes with whistles, they were indeed the better team tonight. The score ended at 3 - 0 with Ryan Miller's 14th career shut-out, but there is so many more numbers that are factors in this game. Most importantly was the change in face off win percentage. I'm not exactly sure why it was so lopsided this evening, but when you go from an over 50% ratio to less than 20%, something is seriously wrong. It wasn't even… -

The Next Move? With or Without a U-Haul
4 Nov 2009 | 4:10 amI'll make this relatively quick, for me that is. I became involved in a political race I couldn't vote in full well knowing what the outcome would be. I'm not surprised that Kate Murray was re-elected as Town Supervisor by a margin of 65% - 35% as the Democrats fell surprisingly short campaigning. However I am also surprised that at 7 am, I can't find out if Tom Suozzi has been re-elected yet. "Too close to call" at 1:13 am when the last time News 12 updated their results. And now at 7 am I'm not sure if we have lost both friends of the Lighthouse project or not. There's nothing to do now but…

Browse more photos » Predators fans will be sending their good vibes out to the team as they await tomorrow's game in Los Angeles; clearly they need to get some of their star players back healthy soon, as the team that skated in Anaheim was woefully shorthanded against the likes of Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan, Koivu and Selanne. Was Branch too Harsh on Liambis?
5 Nov 2009 | 8:18 amI think public opinion is pretty one-sided against the punishment handed down to Erie player Michael Liambas. In fact, I have not seen anyone in favor of Branch’s punishment. I’m going to take the opposite side of this argument. This penalty to Liambas was harsh, sure, but it was appropriate. It was a new benchmark for reckless play. Fanelli literally got his head crushed. That CANNOT be met with shrugs and the classic “that’s good, hard hockey” mentality. No, there has to be more discussion than this. There has to be something. For those who have not seen it,… -
Bauer 4 Roll Hockey Gloves
27 Oct 2009 | 4:00 amThe following is a guest equipment review written by Mark Russo. The saying “What once was old is new again” certainly applies to the hockey glove category these days. While styles of gloves in recent years have moved to more ergonomic and streamlined looks, there has also been a movement among hockey purists to return to the basic, old-school designs that many of us grew up using, while still providing some of the enhanced safety built into the newer styles. Bauer (formerly Nike-Bauer Hockey) first introduced their version of the classic 4 roll glove in 2008, and their newest version in… -
Mike Richards Hits David Booth
25 Oct 2009 | 8:29 amLast night Mike Richards of the Philadelphia Flyers leveled an unsuspecting David Booth with a shoulder to the head and knocked Booth out. In my opinion the hit was not a charge and certainly was not elbowing. Richards squared up and led with his shoulder and followed through on a hit to Booth, who had just made a drop pass. Booth wasn’t looking and Richards made him pay. This is a prime example of the need to keep your head up and not admire your pass. Yes, Richards hit Booth in the head with his shoulder. Now, was it intentional? I would say no. However, intentional or not, the NHL… -

“Hired Guns” for November: Face-Offs
1 Nov 2009 | 10:52 amFantasy hockey is dynamic in the sense that you have to adjust your drafting and acquisition strategies based on the statistical categories that your league has.
