We Threw a Blizzard Party, and Rob Rossi Got Left Out in the Cold
8 Feb 2010 | 11:23 pmA wailing wall ought to be erected to accommodate all the whining from Pittsburgh’s press and message board puckheads: Rob Rossi, a hockey writer for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, is the latest to take up the we’re so aggrieved cause, on his blog on Monday, in a diatribe against the NHL’s decision to contest Sunday’s Caps-Penguins’ tilt. Because there was so much snow, you know. “The NHL and NBC were willing to sacrifice the safety of everybody at Verizon Center on Sunday,” Rossi thunders, “and both companies should consider themselves… -
Collapsed Roof at Virginia Hockey Rink
8 Feb 2010 | 6:51 pmWhile many are enjoying the region’s wintry wonderland, and others are struggling to dig out of the record-breaking snowfall, one area hockey rink truly felt the brunt of this storm. The Prince William Ice Center in Dale City collapsed on Saturday from the weight of the snow. Rink owner Bill Hutzler said, “We had some speed skaters on the ice this morning, then a beam on ceiling started to twist and … we got everybody out.” The rink was home to hundreds of youth hockey players in the region, a tier II hockey club and a tier I junior hockey team. The collapse has… -
Coverage Pressure from the Family Dining Table
8 Feb 2010 | 10:58 amComcast Sportsnet’s Russ Thaler has used his blog at times to detail his family’s growing puck passion, and he does so again today with ‘Thaler’s Thoughts: Snow Caps Making Memories.’ In it Thaler likens the memories he’s forging taking his three sons, Max, Nate and Will, to Caps’ games with those he holds dear from attending New York Giants’ football games with his father as a youth. He’s also got a telling sampling of photos documenting the effort his family made to get to Verizon Center yesterday. It’s a very warm read in our very…

2 Feb 2010 | 2:05 pmLast weekend, I was in Minsk, Belarus, to see the Russian KHL’s All-Star Game. After the game, I was standing in the mixed zone, listening to former NHLer Ville Peltonen, also a Finnish national hero thanks to his hat trick in a World Championship final against Sweden in 1995, when some fans showed up. They said, “pleez, pleez” and gave Peltonen some small flags, posters, and a pen. He said, “sure,” and signed a half a dozen autographs, and posed for a few photos. (Some of my colleagues thought it was such a no-no that the KHL should be fined, but my story’s not going there). I… -
IIHF.com: It’s Petrasek’s time
21 Jan 2010 | 12:53 amJÖNKÖPING, Sweden – A beard is a funny thing. We’ve all seen all kinds of playoff beards over the years, from a few hairs to a full-facial hair masks, à la Henrik Zetterberg. A beard also changes the way a person looks and by the time any playoff season comes to the final series, the players have transformed. It takes time, so the difference is most obvious only the day after, or a few days after the last final, when the players show up to a parade all clean-shaven. Petrasek's having a career year. The beard adds a few years onto the players, it makes them look more rugged. The… -
IIHF.com: Nobody does it better
9 Jan 2010 | 11:11 amAll-time record seals Janne Ojanen’s place in Finnish hockey history. TAMPERE – All-time records can be double-edged swords. On one hand, they are the true testament to the player’s impact to the sport, and a proof of excellence over a long period of time. On the other, they also often get dismissed because the player in question, the one breaking the record, is almost without exception not the same player as he was in his prime. (Martin Brodeur may be an exception.) Number Eight. Janne Ojanen is not the same force he was in the 1980s, 1990s, or early 2000s. At 41, he’s one of those… -
Saku Koivu to captain Finland in Vancouver
30 Dec 2009 | 7:11 amSixteen years ago, Team Finland entered the Olympic tournament with anticipation. It had finished seventh, after it beat France in the game for 7th place, a disappointment for a country that had won its first Olympic medal in Calgary, four years earlier. In 1994, the team had a couple of new faces: Ville Peltonen, Saku Koivu, and Jere Lehtinen made their Olympic debut as Finland pushed Canada to its heels in the semifinal and beat Russia in the bronze medal game. In 2010, the trio is a part of the veteran core of the team, down a notch from their former first line status. Lehtinen, 36, will… -
Blast from the past
28 Dec 2009 | 4:54 amOne from the archives: The first Winter Classic between the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins was such a great success, and such a marketing kick for the sport, that it’s no wonder there will be a sequel to that. And this time there’s reason to believe that the sequel might even out-do the original. A true classicCome on, the Blackhawks take on the Red Wings at Wrigley Field? The air will be so thick of ghosts of sports legends past – and the ice of stars of today – that the sun won’t shine through it. The rivalry between the teams is so great that the Winter Classic II is…

Fight Video: Jody Shelley's right hand defeats Orr
9 Feb 2010 | 7:36 amColton Orr(notes) of the Toronto Maple Leafs must have been feeling pretty confident after his knockout of Ottawa's Matt Carkner on Saturday night. Midway through the first period of the Leafs 3-2 loss against the San Jose Sharks last night, Orr decided to jump up the fight experience ladder moving on from Carkner's 28 career tussles (pre and regular season) to Jody Shelley(notes), a seasoned pugilist with 171 scraps under his belt. 8 Feb 2010 | 10:41 pmNo. 1 Star: Matthew Lombardi(notes), Phoenix CoyotesIt was a career night for the Phoenix forward as his two goals and three assists led the way in the Coyotes' rout of the Edmonton Oilers 6-1. Lombardi, playing on the right wing instead of his normal center, was also a game-high plus-five. His first goal came with 31 seconds left in the first period and then just over a minute into the second, Lombardi fired a wrister past Jeff Deslauriers to give Phoenix a 3-0 lead. Devils' Salmela taken off on stretcher after hit
8 Feb 2010 | 6:38 pmOne recurring topic of discussion this NHL season has been the number of questionable hits doled out whether from knee-on-knee collisions or those to the upper body/head region of a player. Every few weeks it seems another hit happens, Colin Campbell's name is brought up and the "Wheel of Justice" is spun. Sometimes punishment is handed out and sometimes the player in question gets off with a fine or no punishment at all.One of those hits that will debated into tomorrow occurred tonight during the New Jersey Devils-Philadelphia Flyers game. 'Not prepared to make commitment', Gainey steps down
8 Feb 2010 | 2:00 pmAs soon as the words "important announcement regarding the Club's management" were read on the media advisory sent out Monday morning by the Montreal Canadiens, the immediate thoughts were that Bob Gainey would be out as the team's general manager. Darryl Hunt: Shorthanded WorSharks Drop Game to Providence, 5-3
7 Feb 2010 | 5:06 amThe Worcester Sharks overcame several mental mistakes early in the game to take a late second period lead, only to lose that lead in the third period while playing half the period shorthanded in a 5-3 loss to the Providence Bruins Saturday night at the DCU Center in front of 6,319 fans. Worcester defenseman Mike Moore would have the first costly mental error when six seconds into killing Joe Loprieno's interference minor his clearing attempt went into the crowd for an automatic delay of game minor. The win, coupled with the Manchester Monarchs loss, put the WorSharks in first place in the Atlantic division with three games in hand. Ovechkin Routs Crosby Ahead of Olympics
7 Feb 2010 | 8:58 pmEveryone was talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals game today (when they weren’t talking about the Super Bowl, of course) because it’s always intense when Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin face off. Today’s game didn’t disappoint. image: TSN Captain Crosby was able to score two goals but Ovie recorded a hat trick in a comeback that had me on the edge of my seat. It was nasty and gritty and filled with incredible puck handling but, in the end, it was Washington that skated away with the 5-4 victory. Washington coach Bruce Boudreau summed it up perfectly:… -
Tootoo Gets Two Year Extension
7 Feb 2010 | 8:46 pmJordin Tootoo will be staying with the Nashville Predators for, at least, another two years after the team gave him an extension worth $1.15 million in 2010-11 and $1.35 million in 2011-12. image: TSN I think it’s good for him since he isn’t the best player but I think he deserves to be in the NHL. In 26 games with the Preds, he’s got two goals and eight assists. Still, for a little guy, he does have a presence on the ice… Post from: Hockey Beat -
Kovalchuk Traded To New Jersey
3 Feb 2010 | 11:49 pmThere has been so much speculation over Ilya Kovalchuk’s future with the Atlanta Thrashers and where he would be going that it’s almost a relief to learn that he’s been shipped to the New Jersey Devils. image: TSN It’s a pretty big deal since Kovy has been Atlanta’s best player in the franchise’s history so I think it’s unfortunate that he had to leave. In exchange, the Thrashers acquired defenceman John Oduya along with forwards Niclas Bergfors and Patrice Cormier and the Devils first round pick in 2010. Of the transaction, Kovalchuk said: “[The Devils are] a good team… -
Upshall Suffers Torn ACL, Out Indefinitely
31 Jan 2010 | 11:01 pmScottie Upshall was injured when his Phoenix Coyotes beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 last Thursday but the full extent of it was unknown until yesterday. An MRI has shown that the forward suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and will be out of the lineup indefinitely while he recuperates. In fact, he will need to have surgery to correct the problem but no date has been set for the procedure. image: TSN It’s really unfortunate that this has happened now. Upshall is having his best season to-date having scored 18 goals and 14 assists (just two shy of his career best) in 49 games. It’s… -
Oilers Lose Souray to Broken Hand
31 Jan 2010 | 10:56 pmThe Edmonton Oilers have suffered another setback after defenseman, Sheldon Souray, suffered a fractured hand in the 6-1 loss against the Calgary Flames over the weekend. The defeat brought their winless streak to a nasty 13 games and now, without their veteran blueliner in the lineup, things are probably only going to get worse. image: TSN The injury occurred when Souray got into a scrap with Flames captain, Jarome Iginla, in the third. The amount of time he will be benched has not yet been announced (he’s being evaluated today) but this could impact any trade offers that would have…

Boivin le Bavard
9 Feb 2010 | 7:19 amGainey, Boivin and Gauthier at yesterday's press conference (Photo from newsobserver.com).posted by: habsbloggergirlI've been reading a lot about Gainey's stepping-down lately, and it seems that a lot of people are concerned about the language debate that seems to be so intricately connected to the hiring of a new GM, just as it has been with hiring a coach, and even naming a captain.A lot of people, especially in the anglophone and international communities, are really against the Canadiens' (well Boivin's) policy of hiring people only if they speak French, so I thought I would try to give a… -
Did the Wrong Guy Leave the Canadiens?
9 Feb 2010 | 2:35 amposted by Rocket All Habs It's certainly not my intention to open a language debate. Frankly, I don't think it has any place in this forum. I would prefer that any position in the Canadiens organization be filled on merit rather than political considerations. But, I was astonished at some of the things said by Canadiens' president Pierre Boivin at Monday's news conference announcing the resignation of Bob Gainey. They would be unthinkable in any other market in the NHL. Given that Boivin opened the door, I think his comments are worthy of discussion. I also wonder whether Boivin's… -
Goodbye Gainey, Bonjour Nepotism

I'm still learning a lot about the Canadiens franchise, but I've always had the impression and understanding that Bob Gainey was doing good things for the organization. So why would he step down? The unspoken answer troubles me. It doesn't take an advanced degree to figure out that I'm a fan of an American hockey team...my… -

Goonblog would like to extend our condolences to the Burke family. I can’t imagine what they must be going through, and wish to never find out. Good Luck, Trevor!

He is a whiz at having his finger on the pulse of social networking, as well as how to implement said social networking sites to maximize the nerdery from each site. So, GoonBlog is on Twitter now. I thought it was all status updates, and frankly, I get enough of the “I have the best friends ever, or so grateful for what I have” updates on Facebook I want to puke like that blah! Well, once again, I was wrong. Twitter is cool because you can follow different people, and get all the news you need in one…

If Getzlaf Can't Go Who Should Replace Him? Smyth, Carter, Spezza, Stamkos?
9 Feb 2010 | 7:05 amFor up-to-the-second mini updates between blogs follow me on Twitter by clicking HERE Ryan Getzlaf left last night's Ducks/KIngs Game with a sprained ankle. X-Rays take were negative, but he is having an MRI today. This would of course be a blow to team Canada if Ryan can't go in Vancouver and there will not be much time to name a replacement. So this morning's question is: If Ryan Getz -

Confirmed by McKenzie. Gainey Stepping Down, Pierre Gauthier New GM
8 Feb 2010 | 9:18 amUpdated: TSN's Bob McKenzie has confirmed Gainey is stepping down and will be replaced by Pierre Gauthier as Interim GM. I know Pierre very well and he is a standup guy who I believe would make a great permanent GM in Montreal. I will write more on Gauthier later in my rumor blog. From Bob's Twitter... Allen Americans vs. Rapid City Rush: Who’s The Home Team?
16 Jan 2010 | 3:16 pmWhen I’m on the road, and I am seeing two teams where I don’t care who wins, I try to pull for the home team. It’s fun to cheer with the fans, and live and die, for one night, with a team you don’t know much about. But I found it hard to get behind the Allen Americans, and it took me a little but to figure out why. It was the jerseys. If you were to take the style of the Phoenix Coyotes jersey, and combine it with the colors of the Red Wings, you have the Allen Americans. Just look at the font for the names and numbers on the backs of the Americans’ jerseys. -
Colorado Eagles vs. Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees: Wait For It…
16 Jan 2010 | 9:04 amThis is a little out of order, and certainly overdue (as is the 2nd Christmas jersey post, which I promise is coming). It’s the Eagles vs Killer Bees. Welcome to Dodge Arena: Dodge Arena is in the middle of nowhere, or at least, the only thing near the arena is the nicest Best Western hotel I have ever stayed in (and I have stayed in my share). The Eagles came out with a strong start, but the Killer Bees goalie was on fire all night. The second period was all Eagles though, and they ended the period up 2-0. Unfortunately, that lead didn’t last, and the Bees came back to win the… -
Central Hockey League All Star Game
13 Jan 2010 | 10:27 pmI’m going a little out of order here, but I wanted to post the pictures from the CHL All Star Game from Laredo, TX. It was certainly an interesting game, or at least, the hoopla around the game was interesting (yes, I said hoopla). At the very least, I had a great time. Let’s go to the photos: click on any photo to make it bigger. Hey everyone, it’s my good friend, Lord Stanley’s Cup: This is kind of a surreal picture, maybe because the background is a little more in focus than I am, or the Cup for that matter. And for all you Avs fans: The way that 2000-01 Avalanche… -
Colorado Eagles vs. Laredo Bucks: Away Games
9 Jan 2010 | 8:38 amI have only a little time before I have to get on the road to Hidalgo, TX for the Colorado Eagles vs the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees game, so this is mostly going to be a photo essay. I’m cooking up something else later. Click on any photos you want to see bigger. The sky over Laredo before the game was full of color. The arena itself had a little more character than most new buildings, but was still new enough to be modern. It reminded me of where the Grand Rapids Griffins play, or where the Ft. Worth Brahmas played, due to the big wall at one end. I really like this picture. This… -
Texas Stars vs. Houston Aeros: A Study in Penalty Killing
6 Jan 2010 | 10:25 pmTonight’s game between the Texas Stars and the Houston Aeros was more of an interesting affair then the majority of the game seemed. That sounds kind of strange, but it’s actually true. For the vast majority of the game, the Houston Aeros controlled the play, and the Texas Stars, who couldn’t make tape-to-tape passes to save their lives, looked fairly ordinary and disorganized. But for some reason, the Stars pulled out a 3-2 overtime win over the Aeros, who looked better the entire game. The main interest for me was the different styles of penalty killing each team involved,…

Marc-Andre Bergeron Out With Knee Injury
9 Feb 2010 | 12:35 pmvia TSN, The Montreal Canadiens got more bad news on the injury front on Tuesday, as RDS reports that defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron will be sidelined for six to eight weeks with a left knee injury. Bergeron, 29, was signed as an unrestricted free agent last fall. In 51 games with the Canadiens this season, he has 10 goals and 28 points. -
Emery May Be Facing Surgery
9 Feb 2010 | 12:29 pmfrom Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News, Michael Leighton started his third straight game in goal for the Flyers last night in place of Ray Emery, who underwent an MRI yesterday on his sore left hip. A team source told the Daily News that Emery could have a torn labrum that may require surgery. General manager Paul Holmgren said the results from the MRI were not immediately available yesterday. “It seems to be an issue with a lot of goalies in the league and we’re hoping to learn from what Ray underwent today,” Holmgren said. “A lot of goalies have this… -
Capitals A Step Ahead Of Everyone Else When It Comes To Social Media
9 Feb 2010 | 11:59 amfrom Gene Wang of the Washington Post, The Washington Capitals in recent years have moved more aggressively than any other NHL team toward embracing social media Web sites such as Twitter and Facebook, targeting supporters who get their information from non-traditional outlets. Now, with the team in the midst of a franchise-record winning streak led by one of the world’s most dynamic hockey players in Alex Ovechkin, owner Ted Leonsis is hoping the social media strategy will pay off in expanding the club’s popularity and engagement with fans. “The team blew up, and the team… -
A Look Around The League
9 Feb 2010 | 10:30 amfrom Elliotte Friedman of CBC, • Lighter stuff: one of the funniest players in the NHL, Shawn Thornton, had a weird moustache going Sunday as the Bruins ended their 10-game losing run in Montreal. He tried a beard to break the bad streak, but shaved it into a handlebar moustache when that failed. He trimmed down that version after another loss, leading to the victorious current version. “Can’t shave it now,” Thornton said afterwards. “It’s a winner.” • I think the Ilya Kovalchuk decision for Peter Chiarelli came down to this: he wasn’t… -
Predators Thinking Depth
9 Feb 2010 | 9:10 amfrom John Glennon of the Tennessean, “We could use a tweak or two,” Preds Coach Barry Trotz said. “We’re actually scoring more goals than people thought we’d score, but we’re giving up a little more than what we want … So maybe a veteran penalty-killer or a real good faceoff guy, or maybe a guy that’s produced a little bit more (offensively).” Who’s out there? Some of the forward names getting tossed around are those from teams that have nearly been eliminated from the playoff chase — Carolina’s Ray Whitney and Matt…

Game 60: Habs/Bruins
7 Feb 2010 | 7:29 amI dont know about you guys but I’m still feeling great after yesterday’s refreshing win over the defending champs. From the start Montreal took the game to Pittsburgh with speed and determination. They used an aggressive forecheck, and for the first time since Martin uttered the words “puck possession”, the Canadiens delivered with crisp passes in the neutral zone, and bodies crashing the net looking for rebounds. The result was what we’ve been looking for from day 1. The Canadiens battled for rebounds that they never seem to win, and controlled long stretches… -
Game 59: Habs/Pens
6 Feb 2010 | 7:11 amWhat a great weekend this will be with two Canadiens matinee games and the Superbowl. Here’s hoping that it isn’t ruined by Sidney Crosby who I’m pretty sure has never played a bad game against the Canadiens in his life. Sid is having himself a whale of a season with 71 points in 56 games. More impressive is the fact the Kid has taken to scoring goals (37) with reckless abandon, convincing those who had him pegged as a set-up man to re-think their opinion. So this afternoon all of the Habs nation will be cheering in loud opposition to Sid before we change our tune in loud… -
Game 58: Habs/Bruins
4 Feb 2010 | 6:59 amIt never takes very much to set the mood for these two clubs. Living in Beantown last year I can tell you from first-hand experience that Bruins fans feel the same loathing and disgust that we feel towards them. Last year I watched a fat slob of a Broons fan swear at a middle aged French-Canadian woman and block her from passing his seat simply because she wanted to use the rest room while wearing a Habs jersey. As I was leaving TD Banknorth (suffering enough with the normal rage I feel when the Habs lose), I had a particularly hilarious Bruins fan shout me down saying it was “a long… -
Game 57: Habs/Canucks
2 Feb 2010 | 7:25 amThe Habs will be in tough tonight as they face one of the league’s hottest teams in the Vancouver Canucks who have won their last 7 games. They go up against the Sedin twins who some believe came within 24 hours of potentially suiting up for the Habs this year. In itself, that is bad news. Worse however, is the news that the team’s leading goalscorer (by a huge whopping prairie mile) Michael Cammalleri will be sidelined with a knee injury for 6-8 weeks. For the NHL’s worst 5 on 5 team that is about as bad a break as it gets. One of the things I remember talking about during… -
Game 55: Habs/Lightning
27 Jan 2010 | 7:30 amThe Habs will get no time to brood over their frustrating loss in Sunrise last night, as they face the other Florida franchise in Tampa this evening. Taking care of business tonight is essential. The Habs would do well to start early and play like a team that is desperately clinging to a hope of the post season. That sentiment should start at the top. I understand that JM has been playing with a short stack this season due to many injuries, but his Carbo-esque attempts at using grinders in skill spots and vice versa needs to end. I’m going to go out on a limb here and make a…

Devils Need To Be Active at Trade Deadline
4 Feb 2010 | 2:54 amEveryone is looking at Atlanta, wondering where they’re going to trade Ilya Kovalchuk. But don’t forget to keep an eye on New Jersey, a team that also might be active before the trade deadline. Not so much for Kovalchuk, but for a goal-scoring center who can help out on the powerplay. I don’t think Kovalchuk is enough of a consistent two-way player for the Devils to be interested. Plus, he would be way too flashy of an acquisition for New Jersey. And of course, he’s not a center. But Matt Cullen from Carolina? He could be a good fit. He’s a play-making center… -
Improving Attendance in Colorado
3 Feb 2010 | 2:51 amI love how Adrian Dater’s pet issue is tracking attendance at Avalanche games. Yesterday he posted some ideas on how to improve attendance. It’s interesting stuff: brighter lights around the arena; classic rock music, rather than metal; and a high definition JumboTron screen. Dater also talked to some players about the low attendance this season, with one player calling it “disappointing. Dater’s suggestions are good, but the easiest way to improve attendance is to lower ticket prices. There are tons of hockey fans in Colorado. You don’t have to sell them the… -
Rangers and Flames Trade Broken Pieces
2 Feb 2010 | 3:01 amThe Rangers completed their trade for Olli Jokinen this morning, giving up the underperforming Christopher Higgins and Ales Kotalik for Calgary’s Jokinen and Brandon Prust. Kotalik was strange for the Rangers. Brought in as a powerplay specialist, he became such a defensive liability, he found himself a consistent scratch, despite a booming shot. Also, presumably brought in because of his success on a line with Chris Drury in Buffalo, the two didn’t spend much time playing together. So the Rangers unload a healthy scratch who takes up $3 million over three years. Higgins also… -
Did the Devils Self-Coach for Sutter?
28 Jan 2010 | 3:04 amI’ve been shocked by the struggles of the Calgary Flames, both because they seemed like a solid enough team and because coach Brent Sutter did a fantastic job in New Jersey last year. But lately, I’m wondering if he really did as good a job as we think. A large part of the Flames struggles has been an inability to clamp down on opponents. You saw it last night, where the Flames blew a two-goal lead to the Stars. Last season in New Jersey, Sutter introduced an uptempo, offensive system to the previously defensive Devils. It worked well for the Devils, and they transitioned… -
The Benefits of Benching
26 Jan 2010 | 2:27 amI have to say, and say completely without sarcasm, that I think Tampa does a nice job with their young players. Victor Hedman was starting to look a little overwhelmed and outmatched on the ice. Coach Rick Tocchet could have yelled at him or coddled him or told him to figure it out. But instead, he benched Hedman for a game and Hedman found the experience helpful. Hedman noted being in the press box gave him a different perspective on the game. Literally. Because you can see more from above the ice than on it. Tocchet also sat Steve Stamkos a few times last season, which seemed to give him…

Sorry Canucks Fans - No Art Ross for Henrik Sedin This Year
7 Feb 2010 | 12:30 pmJust a couple of short weeks ago Vancouver Canucks fans were abuzz with excitement. Henrik Sedin was atop the scoring race with a healthy lead over potential Art Ross candidates like Joe Thornton, Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby. Of course it is natural to be excited when one of your team's players leads the league in scoring, but considering that no Vancouver Canuck has ever finished the season atop the scoring race (Markus Naslund was the only one to come close) fans and media alike were abuzz with the possibility that Henrik could capture the 2010 Art Ross Trophy. Crosby vs. Ovechkin - Who is the Biggest Star in the NHL Today?
3 Feb 2010 | 11:47 amThere is arguably no hotter debate in the game of hockey today than Crosby vs. Ovechkin. Before these two incredible athletes ever suited up for an NHL game hockey pundits around the world were speculating on which one would become a bigger hockey superstar. Even fate lent a hand in adding fuel to the fire of this match-up. The NHL lockout in 2004-05 season ended up having at least one beneficial side-effect. It delayed Ovechkin’s entry into the NHL by one year, setting up perhaps the greatest rookie rivalry in the history of the game, as he and Sidney Crosby became NHL freshmen in the… -

However, I have been pretty busy watching, listening to, reading about, and basically living hockey for the past few days so I am a few days behind on getting my Eastern Conference preview up. Sorry 'bout that. Keep in mind that these rankings don't necessarily reflect how I expect the actually standings to wind up. The NHL's silly rule that division winners are automatically ranked in the top 3 in the… -
John Tavares Scores Goal In First NHL Game
3 Oct 2009 | 5:41 pmThough a player's first game is obviously not going to be indicative of an entire career, there is something to be said for getting things started off right. Tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins John Tavares joined players like Islanders legend Mike Bossy and Penguins great Mario Lemieux by scoring in his first NHL game. As of this writing Tavares is on an 82 goal pace this season. Watch out Ovechkin, you've got some competition for the Rocket Richard Trophy this year! I'll have the video of Tavare's first NHL goal up later tonight. Check out our selection of John Tavares Jerseys Related…

Toskala Still Wants To Be A Starter
8 Feb 2010 | 6:09 amExpunging his Maple Leafs tenure from memory is understandable for Toskala, whose forgettable stint with Toronto ended Jan. 31 when he was traded to the Ducks with winger Jason Blake for goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Toskala will serve as backup to Jonas Hiller, a scenario that probably won't last beyond this season because Toskala's contract will expire, and keeping him as a backup seems u4 Vote(s) -

Ownership Problems In Atlanta Need To Be Fixed
8 Feb 2010 | 6:03 am"Ultimately, the ownership situation has to be straightened out," Bettman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It's difficult to operate a franchise when owners aren't getting along. It's even more difficult in a recession climate. A team has to be at its very best. Issues have to be resolved and everybody has to be together so they can interact with fans. But that's difficult when the owners4 Vote(s) -

Tuesday's news: To trade, or not to trade, that is the question all around the NHL
9 Feb 2010 | 7:50 amWith the NHL standings typically jam-packed around the #8 and final playoff position in both conferences, the question in many cities is whether or not their GM's should pick up a difference-making player to bolster their team's chances for a long playoff run, or pack it in and obtain some value that will pay off down the road. This morning after the jump, we've got that question being raised, as well as reaction to major changes in Montreal, and an ugly confrontation between a blogger and Mike Milbury at Sunday's Washington/Pittsburgh game... Cal O'Reilly, finally an NHL regular with Nashville?
8 Feb 2010 | 4:48 pmMore photos » Jerry S. Mendoza - AP Browse more photos » By sticking with the Nashville Predators after a number of injured teammates returned to the lineup, Cal O'Reilly now has enough NHL experience to qualify for waivers, and it appears that he'll stick in Nashville for the time being. It's a fine achievement for a guy who's ridden the Milwaukee/Nashville express quite a bit in recent years. Today on the Thom Abraham Show, Cal (coming off a 3-assist night vs. San Jose) talked about his plans for the Olympic break, and how the Predators appear to be set up for a busy… -
All signs point to Bridgestone as Nashville Predators arena sponsor, despite official "no comment"
8 Feb 2010 | 1:27 pmDespite "no comment" responses from officials with both the Nashville Predators and Bridgestone about a potential arena naming rights deal in the making (as reported by Brandon Gee at the Nashville Business Journal earlier today), evidence continues to mount that Bridgestone will indeed take over as the naming sponsor for the Predators' arena (currently the Sommet Center) in the near future. CoolSprings.com, which first broke this story last Friday, posted a series of internet domain registrations that have been made in recent weeks by Bridgestone, presumably reserving them for use relative… -

As with the recently concluded World Junior Championships, home nation favorite Canada and USA should advance to the medal rounds with 3-0/2-1 records after trouncing weak sisters Norway and Switzerland. How convenient for NBC and its sponsors! Group B boasts the trendy gold medal favorite in star-studded Russia. Though the defending World Champions count four of the… -

HOF “Class of ‘09″ begins with “Class”
9 Nov 2009 | 3:28 pmFour players, each of whom’s NHL career spanned three decades, will deservedly take a place alongside the game’s immortals in Toronto this week: Steve Yzerman, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull, and Brian Leetch. Each man left his name on Lord Stanley’s Cup and authored countless indelible memories for hockey fans from L.A. to New York. Additionally, the game of hockey could not ask for four more honorable or classy gentlemen as community ambassadors. The following are my top memories of each legend: Leetch : Simply put, Leetch must be counted among the top four skating defensemen… -
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN! Game 7…
12 Jun 2009 | 4:36 pmThis is drama, this is life, this is hockey: Game 7. I’ve gained such an appreciation for Detroit’s Swedes over the past few seasons. Nick Lidstrom plays one of the toughest positions in sports so effortlessly, and Henrik Zetterberg conjures memories of my favorite player ever, and perhaps his very own boyhood idol, Peter Forsberg (sorry Wings fans, but he was THE best and you know that’s why you loved to hate him!). In Sweden, there is one way to play hockey: completely. Accountable on both ends of the ice, to your team, to yourself. The reigning gold medalists and Cup… -
Good Morning, Stockholm!
30 Apr 2009 | 7:19 amThe reigning Stanley Cup Champion Detriot Red Wings are on a collision course with the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL’s Western Conference. This should come as no surprise to fans of international hockey. Team Sweden runs the most effective system in the entire world of hockey. Predicated on puck possession, speed, and defensive discipline, “Tre Kronor” perfected their style of play in the early 1970’s while competing against the dominant Soviet Red Army empire. Even today, Sweden remains a force on the international scene having won the most recent Olympic gold at…

Jeff Carter Hits Anssi Salmela
8 Feb 2010 | 5:48 amThe barrage of head injuries continues in the National Hockey League this season. The latest victim of a headshot is New Jersey Devils forward Anssi Salmela, who was caught high by a shoulder from Philadelphia’s Jeff Carter after scoring a goal on Michael Leighton. After watching the replays from different angles (as shown in the video below) I believe that Carter hit Salmela with a clean shoulder that appears (as of the second replay angle @ 4:30-4:31) to hit Salmela in his shoulder before following through to high and extending his elbow post contact. This hit was obviously not… -
Reebok Revoke Goalie Pads
8 Feb 2010 | 5:00 amThis review of Reebok Revoke Goalie Pads was contributed by Goaltender Mark Russo. In recent years Reebok (formerly known as “RBK”) has successfully entered the goaltending equipment category, offering varying price points, protection, and styles to fit every level of goaltender. Part of the company’s success has come from tremendous visibility in the professional ranks, with NHL stars like Roberto Luongo, Marty Turco, Ryan Miller, and Marc Andre Fleury wearing and promoting the Reebok brand. Introducing new styles with advancements in protection and stylish graphics is part of… -
Colton Orr Fights Matt Carkner
7 Feb 2010 | 6:50 amIn last night’s game Toronto’s Colton Orr and Ottawa’s Matt Carkner fought for the third time this season. A head injury was incurred during this fight and the fight was clearly staged. Read on to watch the video and please comment with your thoughts and opinions of this fight versus head shots from a body check. A Staged Fight, No Doubt This is one of those hockey fights that the NHL is supposedly trying to get rid of – the staged fight. Most Points By A Goaltender In A Single Game
2 Feb 2010 | 5:00 amWe learned last week that most hockey fans tend not to think about their goaltender as a captain of an NHL team. Well, I think we can safely add that most do not think of the goalie as a player who produces offensively either. However, on February 10, 1993, Jeff Reese of the Calgary Flames had a monumental night in a 13-1 drubbing of the San Jose Sharks. 3 Assists For Reese On that night, Jeff Reese managed to assist on three of the Flames’ thirteen goals, helping Calgary to it’s fifth consecutive win. During that game Reese’s opposing goaltender was Arturs Irbe, who was… -
The Largest Margin Of Victory In NHL History
1 Feb 2010 | 5:00 amDuring the second World War, several NHL players were called into active duty leaving some teams short handed for the hockey season. In 1944, the New York Rangers were especially bad. The team went winless in the first 15 games, won just 6 games the entire season, and were victims of blow-out scores on several occasions. Goaltender Ken McAuley amassed a record Goals Against Average of 6.24, giving up 310 Goals in just 50 Games. Surprisingly, the 23 year-old McAuley played all 50 games that season and was even brought back the following season, where he played 48 games for the Rangers. The…

Consider Taking on Jaroslav Halak or Josh Harding
15 Jan 2010 | 12:06 pmNo matter what kind of fantasy hockey league you are in, there are always people on the lookout for goaltenders. If you fall into this category, take note. Over the past several months, we have heard rumors surrounding goaltenders Jaroslav Halak and Josh Harding. The Halak rumors are far more intense at this point in time, so fantasy managers, especially in keeper leagues may want to consider making a play for Jaro Halak. Halak has been playing 2nd fiddle to Carey Price in Montreal for the past couple years, however, Price’s inconsistencies has allowed Halak to showcase his talents and… -
Take a Chance on Rob Schremp
7 Jan 2010 | 9:40 amFantasy managers savvy to the up and coming talent in the NHL have certainly heard the name Rob Schremp being thrown around over the past several seasons. Perhaps some have seen the video of his crafty “stickmanship” during a Skills Competition in Wilkes-Barre. There’s little doubt in anyone’s mind that he is a crafty player with the potential to put up big numbers, however, his game has not transferred as well to the NHL as some had hoped, so he hasn’t gotten the recognition he may have deserved over the past two seasons. This season started off similarly for Schremp with the… -
Add Backup Goaltenders to Olympic Starters
4 Jan 2010 | 12:35 pmWith the 2010 Winter Olympics fast approaching, it’s time to consider how the games will impact our fantasy rosters. While it certainly won’t have much of an impact if a forward or defenseman misses a game or two, fantasy managers who own an Olympic goaltender should consider adding their backup for the next month of play. It’s not uncommon to see NHL coaches give their Olympic tenders some time off in the weeks leading up to the games. With that being said, it may be worth adding his backup as an insurance policy in case you’re a manager in a league that requires a… -
Stash Jason Williams on IR in Deeper Fantasy Hockey Leagues
31 Dec 2009 | 3:35 pmPhoto by: Quadzilla99 Red Wings right winger Jason Williams is probably available in your moderate to deep fantasy league. Do yourself a favor: snatch him up and stash him on IR. He’s at an ultra-thin right wing position and there’s a good chance he’ll jump right into the 2nd line power play unit for Detroit. Don’t expect Dan Cleary to be floating around on the waiver wire (if he is, certainly snatch him up ahead of Williams). Fantasy hockey managers have become fairly savvy to the production possibilities from the later bloomer, but at least with Williams, he could… -
Consider David Perron in Keeper Leagues
30 Dec 2009 | 1:12 pmFor those fantasy hockey managers participating in keeper leagues this season, it should be worth noting the situation that up-and-coming winger David Perron finds himself in. Perron is a left winger for the Blues, and at the end of this season, St. Louis will have some decisions to make with their veteran leaders in Paul Kariya and Keith Tkachuk. Both players see time at left wing, but both are getting up there in age, and with the strong youth movement currently taking place in St. Louis, the Blues may have to trim the fat a bit to make room for players like Perron to get their NHL legs. If…

The All-Stache Team
29 Jan 2010 | 1:52 pmThe playoff beard. It is a timeless hockey tradition that has lasted through the generations. It is a piece of hockey lore and it will be around until the game ceases to exist. It is hockey. The playoff beard may in fact be the finest tradition in all of sports. But you cannot really have a playoff beard without one important ingredient…the mustache. This fantastic piece of facial hair is essential to the beard, but it is often underutilized by itself. So with that, I would like to introduce my All-Stache Team… Mustache or no, Chico always has a place in my net. You will not… -

Time Machine
17 Jan 2010 | 1:57 pmI was rummaging through some boxes the other day, looking for nothing in particular. Just as I was about to stop and do something productive with my afternoon, I found what I wasn’t looking for…a time machine! Well, not a true time machine, but I did find my very first team jersey, and it did take me for a trip down memory lane. When I was 8, I started to play the game that would guide my life. As I held this jersey in my hands, I thought about my first coach (Coach Siuda), my first game (was so nervous I got sick to my stomach) and how much the game meant to me then & means to me… -

Merry Christmas to all!
23 Dec 2009 | 9:41 pmAs Santa is double checking his list and prepping the sleigh for hard nights work, it is hard to believe that Christmas is upon us. And as I sit here next to the ole tree I got to thinking…nothing says “Merry Christmas” like the old NJ Devils jerseys. What a thing of beauty they were! My boy Chico Resch sporting the old brown pads and looking absolutely dynamite. Simplicity at its finest. And notice no ads on the boards…miss those days. When are these guys gonna wise up and get back to the red & green full time? Gorgeous! Ah, the “Little Ball of…
