If we are of mixed emotions about the end of this hockey season — proud and uplifted by a Capitals team of unlikely cohesion and stunning sacrifice, but also exasperated by the frustration of banishment earlier than forecast, again — that’s as it should be. This Capitals team engineered a vibrant unity of our region in short order, gelling dramatically under their coach and playing precisely the brand of hockey the NHL postseason prescribes. On a near nightly basis they managed to create riveting drama, and a region none too accustomed to that, with the stakes high, fell in…

Of the NHL’s 30 member clubs merely five remain alive in the quest for Stanley, and one of them is ours. That’s a remarkable and wonderful thing, relative to the Capitals’ standing of just two months ago, but better still is the manner in which they’ve arrived at this competitive precipice: all the red-sweatered-wearers are buying into the system and creed and demeanor of their new coach, one of supreme sacrifice, supreme focus, and cohesion. One that works quite well in spring. Remember not so long ago when we evaluated Alexander Semin’s worthiness on a night by…

The New York Rangers looked like they came ready to hit Wednesday night—not necessarily ready to win. For the Capitals, who got an early lead on an Alex Ovechkin power play goal, that meant they needed to be cautious about not getting drawn into any extracurricular activities–especially since they made plenty of trips to the penalty box without them (over the 60-minute time frame, they played 10 minutes total of penalty kill time, so basically half a period). “The start of the Bruins’ series, things got a little bit chippy, and we talked a lot about it, and that was one of the…

For the second time this year, hockey will lead into horse racing. NBC has laid out a similar plan from the Kentucky Derby for the second leg of the triple crown, the Preakness. According to an NBC Sports spokesperson, Game 3 between the Rangers and Devils in the Eastern Conference Final will air on NBC, starting at 1:00 p.m. ET. NBC will stick with the game through two potential overtimes. If the games goes to a third overtime, viewers in the New York market will stay with the game until a winner is decided. It took two local teams, but New York appears to be all in for the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs at this point. Game 1 of the Devils/Rangers Eastern Conference Final series drew a huge 6.2 local rating in New York, the highest number for any Stanley Cup broadcast in the market so far this post-season. It beats out Game 7 of the Rangers-Senators first round series (a 5.7) on MSG for the top spot. Russell Westbrook was the player of the game, scoring 27 points, dishing out nine assists and puling down seven rebounds in only 27 minutes of play. He hit 10-of-15 shots from the field and only turned the ball over once. The big run by the Thunder happened in the third quarter. With OKC already up by 15 points at the half,…

    SHARKSPAGE

  • A look at this season’s free agent list for the WorSharks

    Darryl Hunt
    27 Apr 2012 | 8:13 am
With the off-season for the San Jose Sharks and Worcester Sharks coming far too soon for fans’ tastes, the focus now goes to the draft and free agency. Below is a list of free agents that spent time on the WorSharks roster this season and what this writer thinks the chances are they’ll be back in the organization next season. NHL UFA Ben Guite – While we’d like to see what Guite could do over a whole season without being injured the fact is he isn’t what the WorSharks really need. They need play makers and goal scorers, and Guite just doesn’t do either of…
  • A look back at some games where the WorSharks may have cost themselves some points

    Darryl Hunt
    24 Apr 2012 | 12:47 pm
Every team can look back at some games during their season as say “if only…” in regards to contests they should have won or points they could have gotten for getting games into overtime. With the WorSharks finishing 13th of 15 teams in the American Hockey League’s Eastern Conference and missing the playoffs by ten points they would need a lot of those “if only” type games to make a difference. Well, they did had a lot of them. This is a list of every game where the following happened to either team in a game the WorSharks were involved with: A three goal…

With the Worcester Sharks regular season campaign coming to an end without a playoff run for the second season in a row, it’s time to start with the end of season paperwork. Up first are the “210 Awards”. For those new to the “210 Awards”, they are a mix of serious and (hopefully) slightly humorous awards named for the moniker this writer uses on many message boards. This season’s winners are: Best Forward: John McCarthy is the easy winner here, and that explains why this team wasn’t very good offensively. McCarthy is a solid hockey player, but if he’s your best…

The Worcester Sharks, playing out the string after being eliminated from Calder Cup playoff contention with Wednesday’s Portland Pirates win over the Connecticut Whale, dressed five players on amateur try-out contracts and 11 rookies overall against the number two team in the AHL’s Eastern Conference and for the most part played the St. John’s IceCaps pretty evenly before finally dropping a 3-1 decision Friday night at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts in front of 3898 fans. The 3-1 final is a little misleading because were it not for WorSharks goaltender Harri…

Born in Nizhnekamsk Russia, Nail was drafted second overall by the Sarnia Sting in the 2010 Canadian Hockey League import draft and has since then caught the eye of every scout and general manager in the NHL. I did so because in the last year or two, I’ve become more conflicted about the answer to this question: Should fighting be completely banished? When I was a teenager, I loved watching the replay of my favorite players pummeling an opponent who had it coming to him. Slap Shot: The more foil and high-sticking and blood the better. And now, as a forty-eight-year-old…

Tonight was the final game of the NAHL Robertson Cup, between the host team Texas Tornado, and the St. Louis Bandits.  The weird thing about this particular game was, no matter the outcome, the Bandits were over.  The team is folding, but I don’t have a lot of information beyond that. I would like to tell you that St. Louis skated off victorious, but – spoiler alert that I’ve already spoiled – they did not.  Texas scored on a weird rebound and broken coverage in overtime, making the local fans ecstatic, and leaving the Bandits empty. I’ll let the photos tell…

The Robertson Cup format is a bit like the Memorial Cup of the CHL.  6 teams (5 division winners and the host city team) are invited, play a round robin, and the top 4 go to the semifinals.  Those were today. I will say that the first period of the first game (St. Louis Bandits vs. the Amarillo Bulls) was some of the hardest hitting hockey I…

The NHL is starring down the possibility of a Stanley Cup final with some uninspiring names, and people seem to think that the league is sweating bullets over the possible ratings. And I don’t see a reason why. The NHL already has a broadcast contract with NBC for the next few years. It’s the best deal with the most attention they could get (I haven’t heard a single complaint about hockey not being on ESPN this offseason). Had the league gone with the World Wide Leader, would you have seen as much of the first round as you have? No way.  There isn’t the room for the…

    18 Apr 2012 | 8:28 am
I keep hearing about how four sets of eyes missed the Torres check last night, but this is a misstatement.  Two sets of eyes missed the play, and two had no influence on it.  Like it or not, the job of the linesman is to call the lines, not penalties like this. Coming out of the lockout, the director of officiating at the time, Stephen Walkom, and the league told the linesmen to stick to calling the lines, and a few other penalties, like too many men on the ice.  They can stop the play for a premature substitution (like a skater getting on the ice before the goalie is off the ice), or…

I’ve talked about what bugs me about Dater’s approach to the team and reporting before, but today’s wrap up of the woes and the end of the playoff push (or lack of push in the end) neatly sums up what I don’t like and fail to understand about his writing about the Avalanche,…

Accompanying the story was a file photo of Richards, shown standing behind the bench, wearing a placid look on his face, his hands in his pockets. Behind him, there is a woman in the stands — and she is yawning large. That about covers it. The Blue Jackets are in desperate need of a cultural shakeup. With Richards, they took the safe route and maintained the status quo. Yawwwn. The fans…
  • Cup Contenders?

    Paul
    16 May 2012 | 10:04 am
from Josh Cooper of The Tennessean, While it’s understandable that some forecasts predict an offseason of gloom and doom for the Predators — there are 15 unrestricted and restricted free agents on the current roster — with a few minor tweaks, this team can contend for the Stanley Cup next season. Ownership says it has the money to re-sign its important unrestricted free agents, namely All-Star defenseman Ryan Suter. Defenseman Shea Weber’s restricted free-agent status means his return is likely. If forward Alexander Radulov decides not to come back to the Predators,…

from Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sidney Crosby and Jordan Staal have one year left on their contracts, and Evgeni Malkin has two. Negotiations with Crosby and Staal can’t begin until July 1, so there’s no way of knowing precisely what they’ll be asking for, but Shero reiterated that his goal is to retain all three. “I’d like to do that, if possible,” he said. “We’re looking at hopefully getting extensions with [Crosby and Staal].” While it is conceivable that Staal, the team’s No. 3 center, might want to play…

I don’t write this very often, but this series could very well be over in 4 games. The Coyotes are frustrated and have lost their offensive game. • Marc Bergevin named GM

    Mats Naslund
    2 May 2012 | 9:53 am
So after a long search it has finally been leaked that Marc Bergevin will replace Pierre Gauthier as General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens. Bergevin has been the assistant GM to Stan Bowman in Chicago since June of 2011. Though he has a little less than 1 season`s experience in that position, he has spent 2 seasons as Chicago`s Director of Player Personnel, among other positions for the past 7. Bergevin is an interesting choice. A Montreal-born defenseman who played just under 1200 games in the NHL, Bergevin is an ideal candidate – but lacking in the knockout experience that someone…

So this is what it feels like to be a Leafs fan huh? Have you selected another team to follow as they make their way towards the Stanley Cup finals? (Barf). Or have you moved seamlessly into the baseball season – waiting for nights where shorts and a t-shirt won’t result in hypothermia? I have to say its been tough for me to watch the post-season without the Habs. There are teams that I hate less than others – so there is always the simple option of cheering AGAINST those teams that I can’t stand.. (aka the Bruins and Flyers). For the first time in a long while there…

    7 Apr 2012 | 10:49 am
At the start of the season – most would have guessed that this final Saturday Night matchup between the Habs and Leafs would have more meaning to the playoff picture. Yes, the outcome could effect whether the Habs or Oilers pick second overall in the draft – but ultimately this is not what the schedule makers envisioned when they chose to end the season with this classic match.  With a win the Habs will “lock-up” the third worst record in hockey. If they lose and the Oilers win – the Oilers would finish in 28th spot by virtue of more wins. This is hardly what…

At game 81 its easy to look back at this season as an utter failure. It was in many respects. From the firing of coaches on game-days, to terrible panic trades, to the trading of players in games – the season was a bit of a sh!t show. Still, 81 games ago did you think it was even remotely possible that Eric Cole would have 11 goals on the powerplay and rank 13th over-all for goals? Having played in all 80 games to date, the former Hurricane has destroyed his critics who said he couldn’t play away from Carolina and Eric Staal – putting up the best numbers of his career next…

The bad news is that Carey Price has been diagnosed with a concussion following a collision with David Desharnais in practice prior to the team’s 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers last Friday(edit* I’ve since read that the injury occurred on March 20). The Habs have decided to shut Price down for the remainder of the season, which is certainly the best move given how meaningless the final 3 games will be for the Canadiens this season. The good news is that Montreal has even less of a chance at gaining points over the final 3 games which could have an impact on which position that…

However, more protection often gives players a sense of security that they are unlikely ...

Battled. Potential. Disappointed. Those are three words to describe the 2011/2012 Rochester Americans season and in the end what was dubbed “Sabres University” was a big let down. It was a fun season at times but it was far from a great season. It was a miracle the team found a way to make it into the playoffs (thanks for the most part to the overtime point) but no one should accept that and be happy.  If the team would have missed the playoffs the easy excuse would be that all of the call ups and injuries throughout the season had a major impact but they found a way in and they…

It’s time to be honest for a moment and simply say that game stunk.  The Toronto Marlies swept the Rochester Americans in three games to advance to the second round of the playoffs.  The series was a dominating performance by the Marlies that just completely exposed the faults of the Rochester Americans roster, especially in game three.  The Marlies scored three goals and shut the Amerks out, the first game out of 13 played that was decided by more than one goal. The Amerks had heart and gave it there all but the Marlies had more talent and it showed. (Photo by David Sturm, view more…

This is it.  That’s been a common theme throughout the 2011/2012 season for the Rochester Americans in needing to find ways to turn the season around and stay alive.  At times when they’ve seemed down and out they’ve found a way to rebound and win some games.  Can they find a way to go on a three game winning streak?  The odds are against them being down by two games in a best of five series but we should expect a decent hockey game Monday night at the War Memorial. Why the NHL Needs the Sunbelt Good stuff here from Slate blogger Matt Yglesias: The issue is the bifurcated cable television markets in North America. Right now, hockey has a national broadcast deal in Canada and it has another one in the United States. Losing the national deal in the USA would be very costly to the entire enterprise. But to maintain that national deal, the NHL has to present itself as offering a true nationwide sports league which means you need teams in the sunbelt. Atlanta's departure didn't leave too much of a hole in the map since there are teams in North Carolina…

  • Top Third-Year Receivers Poised For A Breakout Season

    Ray Tannock
    15 May 2012 | 3:22 pm
One of the many rules of thumb in fantasy football is to make sure you are fully aware of the many receivers entering their third year of play. The reason for this is because the third year of play often becomes the player’s potential “breakout” season. One shining example of this theory is Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin, who broke out last season—with a rookie quarterback, mind you—posting career numbers in catches (87), yards (967) while tying his record in TDs (6) from his rookie campaign back in 2009. This theory does, however, come with its fair share of risk involved.

The Flyers were without star Claude Giroux last night who was serving a one-game suspension.  With how the game went last night, he could have made an impact. 6 May 2012 | 8:52 pm
Throughout these playoffs, Claude Giroux has been a big bright spot for the entire league, taking his elite game to a national stage and getting some real recognition for it. But after a strong start to Sunday’s Game 4 against the New Jersey Devils, the Philadelphia Flyers start is going to be recognized for one big part of the action, and it’s not positive. With just seconds remaining in the second period of Game 4, Giroux took his shoulder to the head of Dainius Zubrus. Zubrus dumped the puck into the offensive zone and Giroux skated in front of him, thrusting his shoulder up…
  • The Flyers Spoil a Great Effort From Ilya Bryzgalov, Drop Game Two 4-1

    Johnny Machurek
    2 May 2012 | 2:05 pm
The Philadelphia Flyers have had no problem scoring so far in the playoffs, the only thing that has hindered them at times is the play from their netminder.  Last night Ilya Bryzgalov gave them a solid effort, but Philly could generate no offense. Matt Read struck first for the Flyers just 2:53 into the game.  That would be the last time Philly would see the back of the net, not so much because of the play of New Jersey Devils netminder Martin Brodeur but because of Philly’s ineptitude on offense ability to generate shots. The best power play in the first round was shutdown…

    30 Apr 2012 | 8:21 pm
The Philadelphia Flyers came out very rusty, playing their first game since they eliminated the Pittsburgh Penguins last Sunday.  The win yesterday over the New Jersey Devils was a lot close than than last Sunday’s contest. Philadelphia as usual fell behind in the first when Zach Parise scored 3:16.  If it was not for the play of Ilya Bryzgalov in the first period, the Devils could have easily ran away with the game in the first.  New Jersey had the first 11-shots in the game and Bryz only allowed one-goal. In the second period Philly notched two-goals in the span of less than…

What can be said for the Washington Capitals 2012 Cup drive? It was a team effort.      (Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE)The Washington Capitals parted ways with Bruce Boudreau during the 2011-12 season. Luckily for Boudreau, the Anaheim Ducks came calling. The Capitals however, felt just as fortunate to be able to hire a coach they had sought after for quite some time in long time former Capitals forward Dale Hunter. When Hunter arrived, the atmosphere changed immediately. A new voice, a new challenge and plenty of work to do to salvage a season that seemed at the time, a road to somewhere outside the elite eight in the Eastern Conference.Less then six months on the job though,…

  • Will The Vancouver Canucks Seek To Trade Roberto Luongo?

    Randy Holt
    24 Apr 2012 | 1:44 am
The Vancouver Canucks are fresh off of their most recent disappointing showing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but that doesn’t mean we’re done talking about them. Though trade rumors usually tend to pick up once the Cup has been hoisted and the summer has officially begun, rumors have already begun to swirl about a certain high profile goaltender. Roberto Luongo didn’t make it all the way through the Canucks’ loss to the Los Angeles Kings this postseason. He was replaced by backup Cory Schneider after allowing seven goals in the first two games. Schneider figured to be a…

The Vancouver Canucks received some good news. Daniel Sedin will participate in the Vancouver Canucks full practice on Tuesday. Sedin, who missed 12 games with a concussion that was caused by Duncan Keith’s elbow to the face on March 21, 2012. The Canucks are down 3-0 to the Los Angeles Kings and getting Daniel Sedin back will help the Canucks offensively. But, it’s going to be too late to help the Canucks to win the series. The Canucks are struggling to score goals, scoring only 4 goals in 3 games. Sedin is questionable on Wednesday night for Game 4. The biggest reason why the Kings are…

Matt Lashoff possesses the type leadership qualities every teams needs to succeed and with Lashoff’s leadership, he has help lead the Toronto Marlies to a whole new level. After Lashoff played 11 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs towards the end of the 2010/11 NHL season. This former first round pick was hoping to be among the team’s first AHL call-ups this season by the Maple Leafs. Those hopes were all ruined when Lashoff injured his knee during a game in October, during an incident that was called a “questionable hit” by Toronto Marlies Head Coach Dallas Eakins.

Even though the Toronto Maple Leafs 100th year anniversary is five seasons away, Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment has already formalized a trade mark logo for this special occasion. As I look at the logo it appears with the images and wording, that this logo is clearly to commemorate the Toronto Maple Leafs 100 years in the NHL. I would also expect that this logo would be sown onto the shoulder part of each game worn jersey. With this 100th season coming up I would like to think the City of Toronto and the Air Canada Centre will likely get to host the All-Star game to co-inside with their…

It’s easy to blame the Russians. Canadian hockey fans love doing it. If the team fails, it’s the fault of the Russians.  It’s easy, most people just accept the generalized ethnic stereotype and it’s become part of hockey culture in Canada. For me personally, it’s getting old, kind of sickening, and just sounds like caveman mentality that too often finds its way into the game I love. You don’t have to look very hard to find recent examples of this, just look at the Nashville Predators. Not long after (and even before) the Phoenix Coyotes eliminated the Predators the McCarthyist…
