    Andrew Tomlinson - OFB Intern
    20 Nov 2009 | 7:05 am
His return has been long in the making. After a career-year three years ago, Capitals’ Captain Chris Clark fairly faded into obscurity. Two groin pulls, a wrist injury, and a demotion to the third line later, the captain has finally made his return from the abyss to become a critical part of  Washington’s team yet again. Three seasons ago, in just the second year of his tenure with the Capitals, Clark had been placed on the same line as the league’s brightest young star, Alexander Ovechkin. The 6′0” South Windsor, Connecticut, native put together the most…

OFB inspiration and muse, Tara Wheeler A motivating factor for my writing for the Canadian media site fadoo.ca this hockey season is my belief that HockeyWashington has so many terrific stories to tell, and I want them exported. With ‘Hockey’s Biggest Heroes Sometimes Come in the Smallest Packages,’ I’ve shared with our Canuck cousins to the North my favorite story of 2009: Tara Wheeler. And so I begin: “We’ve a hockey hero in Washington who doesn’t go by the name of Ovechkin. In fact, coming in at 5’ 7 and barely 115 pounds, she’s seriously lacking in…

The Washington Capitals have recalled 6’3”, 208-pound defenseman John Carlson from Hershey. No word yet on whether Carlson will suit up when the Caps host the Montreal Canadiens Friday night, though with Milan Jurcina and Shaone Morrisonn both listed as day-to-day it seems Big John has a fair shot at hitting the ice. For more on our early impressions of Carlson, read our assessment of his performance in the Caps’ first exhibition game this season.

    19 Nov 2009 | 4:17 am
I watched Wednesday night’s Detroit-Dallas game on the NHL Network within a morbid context. On my commute home last night I read ‘Detroit: A City on the Brink,’ published last month in The Week magazine. I recommend it as must-reading for all hockey fans and every American. The narrative in this piece is nothing short of harrowing. Most Americans I think have a general/vague notion of how tough times are in Michigan generally (the nation’s highest unemployment rate — by far) and Detroit most particularly. But I wonder how many know just how truly desperate times…

MOSCOW – In 2008, Linköpings HC shocked its fans when it announced that it had rented its three star players, Magnus Johansson, Tony Mårtensson, and Mattias Weinhandl, to the KHL. Johansson went to Atlant Mytishchi, Mårtensson to Ak Bars Kazan, and Weinhandl to Dynamo Moscow. The dynamo of Dynamo. After all, Mårtensson had won the scoring title, Weinhandl had been the runner-up and with his 35 goals in 54 games, the league’s leading goal scorer. Johansson had signed with Linköping upon his return from the NHL, but instead of taking the team back to the final, the trio chose to play in…

ÖRNSKÖLDSVIK, Sweden – Peter Forsberg has crashed a few nets in his time, but on Monday, he - together with a lifelong buddy, Markus Näslund - crashed the Modo Hockey web server when it was announced that both of them would return to the team this season. Forsberg played three games early in the season, collecting four points (three goals), before taking a timeout, and to heal from a stress fracture in his foot. Näslund, on the other hand, retired from hockey after last season, and has followed Modo’s struggles this season as a board member of the club. “I will do everything in my…

NCAA Hockey 101 is a weekly feature on U.S. Division I college hockey. Stick around and you just might learn a thing or two. Last week I talked about some of the great traditions in college hockey, and the common theme to all of it was fan interaction. College hockey has great fans but, as I alluded to, sometimes the fans can go a little too far.Personally, I'm more than a little comfortable with profanity, and chants featuring the word [expletive], [expletive] or even [expletive] don't bother me. I get it, it's college-age kids having a good time and being vocal in support of their team at a…

He was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game-misconduct in the Stars' 4-1 loss to the Jackets. Here's the hit and a TSN roundtable about the hit. Bob McKenzie, as Bob McKenzie does, nails it: The "optics" of the hit make this a slam-dunk suspension, according to the NHL Wheel of Discipline. Unable to get what I wanted at the time, I decided to wait until another opportunity presented itself. That opportunity came this past Monday at the Bruins, Islanders game. During a second period timeout, Rask skated over to where I was shooting and I was able to finally get the shots of his mask I wanted. Later this weekend I'll put up some shots of Dwayne Roloson's mask.

One problem with Barnaby's analysis, if you do not want to see another regular season game out of the Sharks this year you are going to miss some very good hockey. There are no more 'Big 4' or 'Big 2' teams in the Western Conference as parity has come abruptly to the fore. Eleven teams are within 10 points of first place almost a quarter of the way into the season. That being said, the return from injury of Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi and Ryan Vesce add more speed…

  • Is This The Worst Call of the Season?

    Jeanne Dupuis
    19 Nov 2009 | 1:24 pm
Almost every hockey fan has seen a seriously bad call made by the officiators but this one is probably the worst I’ve seen in a long time. The Detroit Red Wings were looking for a game-tying goal and they got it.  The only problem was that it was deemed a non-goal and I can’t understand how anyone could make this call.  It’s clearly in the net, fricking Alex Auld has to scoop in and dig it out and they still claim it wasn’t conclusive?  It’s pretty obvious that it was a goal but the Red Wings ended up losing 3-1 and I totally believe this is the reason for it.

Amazing what happens when the Power Play is working, and playing with a truculent attitude eh? Looks like the blue print for success moving forward. While it wasn’t exactly a knock down, drag em out affair, it was markedly more physical of a game last night. Shawn…

In off the ledge Bruins fans. In off the ledge. It is way too early to panic. The Bruins will make the playoffs with their current configuration. They play in a fairly week division and can get it done. Look at how they have played over the last three games, and it’s easy to see a club that is working hard, but has a bit of a goal scoring problem. Having said that, here are three things the Bruins need to do to win their division and possible make a run at Lord Stanley. 1. Get an immediate return for Phil Kessel. The Boston Front Office did a very nice job jettisoning a malcontent that…

    22 Oct 2009 | 1:28 pm
Mighty Matt Carkner was signed to a 2-yr deal by the Ottawa Senators this week, just a few short days after his first-ever NHL goal. He also soundly beat the snot out of Steve Downie on the 15th. To say it’s been an incredible month for the man would be an obvious understatement. I have gotten to know Matt a little - as we’re both residents of Westport, Ontario - and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. The Cove, a classy Westport Hotel has organized the CarkBus for all of us proud residents this evening, and I have to wrap this up if I’m going to make it down…

So, the beloved Bruins are the feel bad story of the year so far. One minute they look like world beaters, the next they look as if Perkins School for the Blind would give them a run for their money. I think what they need is a real good knockdown, drag em out divisional game to get back on the path to glory. I’m not here to talk feel bad though, let’s talk feel good. I watched the game Friday with some buddies, and we discussed where Brian McGrattan was. “In Calgary.” I said. Riveting eh? Anyway, Friday night McGrattan recorded a Gordie Howe Hat Trick in just 5:55 of ice time against…

The package would be some serious picks, prospects and 2 top six

    19 Nov 2009 | 9:45 am
As many of you remember, I attended Team USA Camp in Chicago and I left with three major impressions: #1. Brian Burke was building a team. Burke himself said that he wasn't looking for the 23 most talented Americans, he was looking for the 23 Americans that could best help this team compete in the Olympic Games in Vancouver. That meant two scoring lines and then grit. If you were generally c

News broke in the Tribune and then Vanished. It is all very odd. Here is what I have heard. They have been close for sometime to a deal with Kane and Toews, Keith is more complicated. So why are the three linked together you may ask? Well it is tricky of course, but this is the new Blackhawks, so it should be rather obvious. The Hawks have always been an image conscious team. The internet is awesome, isn’t it? I mean, we have all sorts of things to keep us occupied, like hockey blogs, and hockey podcasts, and… other hockey blogs! But clicking around the internet is tedious work, and disappointing when you visit a site over and over only to find it looks exactly the same as before. Or what if the site itself just plain looks bad, makes it hard to read (fonts too small, bad color choices, eye straining or distracting flash banners and ads), or is so chock full of advertisements that you can barely tell the ads from the good stuff. An unreadable site…

This was so spot on, I thought it deserved it’s own post. Mark from Alaska wrote this comment about the Avs 3rd jersey: They look like a replica of an old fashioned sweater using new technology/fabrics. I don’t buy into the fact that a sleek fabric makes a player better or faster. Constant gut-checks, love of the game and a hatred of failure makes players better…RBK doesn’t really help or assist, it only makes them look worse in the process. I’m pretty sure the goal leaders in the NHL won’t be thanking RBK for their great season unless contractually obliged…

Jason was a lot of fun, and I thank him for showing up. Now, if only the Kamloops Blazers had shown up. - The Colorado Eagles are 7-0-1 so far this season, putting them first in the Conference with the least amount of games played. We will see what happens when they hit the road, but for now, things are looking pretty good in Ft. Collins. - The same can’t be said for the Avalanche. You know,…

(the picture is from Icethetics, who got it somewhere else) Great, the Avs will be playing in a Snuggie. Look, I’ve made no secret of my dislike to the RBK EDGE jerseys, and the Avs home and away jerseys aren’t my favorites. These? Add them to the list. I’m really not sure what the point of having a photo negative of the previous 3rd jersey is. Perhaps it’s just…

Dorsett was among a group of players battling along the wall for the puck when Neal came charging in. Neal appeared to leave his feet to deliver a blow to Blue Jackets defenseman Marc Methot, but instead he hit Dorsett in the back. The force of the blow drove Dorsett face-first into the glass. He fell to the ice and could not get up. In case you missed the hit, watch it here.

During the past couple of years, Bob has let assets like: Souray, Streit, Komisarek, Ryder, Koivu, Tanguay, Kovalev, and others move on to other teams without getting anything in return. I read today that Toskala is “happy” with his performance and said it was his best start of the year. That is saying a lot about how far Vesa has come since platooning with Raycroft two seasons ago. Raycroft and Toskala were easily the two most deluded goaltenders in the league when they played together. It was never a reflection on them when they lost and they always felt “great” about their performance. A tough night for Pittsburgh in Ottawa last night. The Penguins had Max Talbot and Sergei Gonchar back and they still blew an early lead to the Senators. Pittsburgh looked tired. It could just be the time of season or it could be all of the injuries the healthy players have had to compensate for over the course of the season. Someone asked Dave Molinari if he thought poor conditioning was behind all of the Penguins injuries. Molinari said going deep into the playoffs so frequently could end up taking a physical toll on the team. So Pittsburgh could literally wind up a victim of its own…

Now, whenever NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman talks about the viability of the team, it has the desperation of someone trying to unload a used car they can’t afford to keep for any extended amount of time. Bettman was in Phoenix this week, just so he knew at least one person would be at the game. And why hasn’t that success been duplicated at home? HEIKA: Those are two good questions. My guess is the Stars have been able to turn off their brains a little more on the road and just play simple hockey. It took the Thrashers most of last season to adjust to coach John Anderson ’s system. While Anderson admits the team still isn’t “firing on all cylinders," the Thrashers are off to a much better start this season and are 10-6-2 after Thursday's shootout loss to Boston.

The only thing I have seen is HC Bylsma reporting his hope that either Gonchar or Orpik would be in tonight's lineup, so take it for what it's worth (I would think Gonchar would be more likely than Orpik for a return since Orpik just returned to practice yesterday) - even so, there haven't been any headlines on…

It's too bad Philly plays like dirtballs when they are losing because the game was high scoring and action packed for three full periods. The Pens looked great right from the first puck drop. Crosby won 88% of face offs, they were connecting passes on every line, and Fedotenko put the pressure on in front of the Flyers net that led to them scoring on their own goal. You might think this is a pile of bull, but here’s a quick story. A friend of mine played NCAA hockey in the East, and one season he went to Colorado Springs for a road game at Air Force. The teams were equally conditioned and talented, and played tight first and second periods. Though the third period began with a tie score, the boys from the East were…

Very early in the 2009-2010 NHL season we have already experienced more controversy about head shots, more injuries to star players, and with that comes more speculation about what the league can do in order to protect players without sacrificing the excitement of the game. I think public opinion is pretty one-sided against the punishment handed down to Erie player Michael Liambas. In fact, I have not seen anyone in favor of Branch’s punishment. Atlantic Division Team Goaltenders Opponents Advice New Jersey Devils 1. Brodeur 2. Danis Washington, New York Islanders, @Ottawa Safe to Start. Yann Danis was able to sneak on ice and grab a win last week. That should have given Brodie enough rest to take the next 6 or 7 games. Look for him all this week, and if you’re looking for a high percentage win opportunity, consider the games against New York and Ottawa New York Islanders 1. Roloson 1a. Biron…
